James... James Bond(!)
Those of you who don't like Bond, don't read any further. Normal politics service will be resumed tomorrow.
I was lucky enough to get to see the new Bond movie, Quantum of Solace, yesterday. And while it was pretty good, I was left a wee bit underwhelmed.
It certainly wasn't as good as Casino Royale - of which it is set immediately after. Bond, you are led to believe, is now a loose cannon, hitting out at anything which will lead him to the man that killed his love interest, Vesper, in the previous installment. Which is all well and good - and it explains a why in previous Bond movies (which are set AFTER these two - keep up!) Bond is cast as chauvinistic, almost misogynistic in his treatment of women (Moneypenny and M aside) and with little regard for his own safety - but it gets a bit tiresome when in every scene you are wondering which of the goons Bond is going to beat up next.
Saying that, it is still a decent flick, and worth seeing. However, with Bond as a different character (ie, the sensitive, smouldering... etc) the film doesn't stay true to the classic Bond story (less cars, gadgets, Martini, women - and no catchphrases) so if that is what you are looking for you'll be disappointed.
But still... miles better than Matt Damon's Jason Bourne (opens can of worms...).

Shame on you man! Bourne is great. I haven't seen Quantum yet but one of the reasons Casion Royale was so good was its move AWAY from the catchphrases, crass comedy, gadgets, bloody Roger Moore, and yes, the chauvinism.
I'm in Austria at the moment, was watching one of the Roger Moore movies, and when you can't understand the dubbed dialogue, it forces you to concentrate on God-awful "acting"! I never knew a man's eyebrows could move that much and convey so little!
Anyway, new "realistic" Bond and Bourne are the way forward for action movies. Except for The Rock of course. Classic!
I saw Bond on Friday night. I have not seen Csino Royale as I wouldn't consider Bond as my fav movies. However having seen quite a few Pierce Brosnan Bonds I also left a little underwhelmed. It was a good movie but I'm not sure I like the humanisation of Bond so much. I like the gadgets, car chases, explosions etc. Fair enough, this movie began with a car chase but it just didn't have the same punch.
Bourne.
just saw the movie last night. i personally really like new bond (but i have a grudge against the best 'old' bond ie. mr connery) loads of action...though admit the story was slightly tenuous at times (also why did they send a lowly desk jockey to retrieve out of control maverick 007??? and then not show any sexy sex!)
thought it was a bit of a twist that he didn't get the other girl. i like bond better as a charmer and protector of women, rather than a chauvanistic jerk in a tux.
and he's HAWT to boot ;P
i have to side with malc on the bourne thing though...
